Stanced Porsche Boxster 986

When the Boxster first hit the market, there was an outcry from Porsche fans worldwide. 911 enthusiasts didn’t like that everything in front of the windshield was identical to the 996 version of Porsche’s 911 model.

While it saved the German carmaker from bankruptcy, many enthusiasts still felt the Boxster was unworthy, and Porsche purists refused to accept that their superior 996 could be mistaken for a model built for “regular” people.

Daniel, from Bomlo, Norway, bought his 986 Boxster when he was just 21, and as you can see, he’s clearly put some time and money into this project.

We can only imagine what those P-car purists think of Daniel’s Boxster, but I can guarantee that it turns more heads than an ordinary 996 Carrera.

Even before purchasing the Porsche, Daniel had a clear vision: to build a cool, stanced car unlike anything else he’d seen on Norwegian roads. If you know anything about Norwegian car culture, you probably also know that’s no easy task.

In December 2022, Daniel sold his previous project car, an F31 BMW with air suspension, and he began searching for his next project.
There weren’t many specific criteria for the new build, but it had to look good, it should have bucket seats, and he’d prefer a model no one else in Norway had fitted with air suspension.

Initially, he set his sights on a Toyota MR2, but by the end of January, he still hadn’t found one in good enough condition. Pearls of sweat began forming on his forehead — would it even be possible to buy and finish building a car in time for the show season?

In a moment of spontaneity, Daniel shifted his focus. While he was searching for an MR2, he stumbled upon a Porsche Boxster, and a couple of months later, it was still for sale. He gave it a shot, sent the owner an impulsive offer, and became the proud owner of the Porsche Boxster you see here. Except, it looked nothing like this.

Before Daniel could even drive, he was hanging out with people involved in the local car scene. He fell in love with some of the stanced cars he saw there, and that style has stuck with him through all his projects. There was never any doubt that the Boxster would get the same treatment.

Before picking up the car, Daniel made a note on his phone, linking to all the parts he wanted: air suspension, air management, speakers, amplifiers, subwoofers, exhaust system, bucket seats, and much more.

While towing the car home on a trailer across the snow-covered Norwegian mountains in February, Daniel handed his phone over to his buddy and told him to go ahead and order everything on the list.

Once the parts arrived, it only took him three and a half weeks to complete most of the project. The car was ready in March — just in time for spring.

It certainly helped that most of the parts were made specifically for this model and bolted straight on without requiring major tweaks and modifications. That said, there are still plenty of custom-made parts here.

Exterior-wise, you’ll find an aggressive front bumper and side skirts from a Porsche 996 GT3, and they look heaps better than the fiberglass 997 GT3-style bumpers people usually opt for when modifying their 986 Boxsters. The headlights have been tinted, and the car has a Cayman-style hardtop from Zeintec — definitely not something you see every day in Norway.

The more observant among you may have noticed that the Boxster sits “slightly” lower than normal, thanks to an air suspension setup from Airmext with Down air management. Personally, I prefer a static setup, but I’ll gladly admit this looks very naughty and really suits the Boxster.

In fact, the air suspension lowers the car so much that it now sits just a few centimeters off the ground, and the bold, three-piece Rotiform OZT wheels are perfectly flush with the fenders.

Speaking of the wheels, these bad boys measure 19×9 inches in the front and a whopping 19×11 in the rear. Some might find it odd that Daniel has only wrapped them in Minerva F205 rubber measuring 225/35-19 at the front and 255/30-19 at the rear. But, of course, stretched sidewalls are a must for any self-respecting stance build.

The color is by far the Boxster’s most eye-catching feature. Daniel went with Audi Java Green and painted it himself… the most impressive part about it is the fact that this was his first attempt at painting a car — I tip my hat, sir!

In the front trunk, or “frunk,” he’s installed a proper show setup. On top is the valve block with angled hard lines made from stainless steel pipes for maximum wow factor, and it’s all complemented by LED lighting, controlled via an app.

There are two GAS Pro Power amplifiers, one hidden and one built into a false wall. Under the false floor lies an air tank, and the air suspension compressors are tucked away somewhere in the front as well.

The interior has been on the receiving end of a severe makeover. Gone are the standard Porsche seats, and in their place, we find a pair of snug Sparco bucket seats, giving the driver and passenger a proper bear hug when cornering and keeping them in place. In front of the driver, there’s a Stutz steering wheel, color coordinated to match the car.

When Daniel wants to chill to his favorite tunes, he can fire up the sound system. A 1-DIN Pioneer head unit with a flip-out screen sends good vibrations to a 4” Helix component set in the dashboard, 6.5” speakers in the doors, 4 GAS Silver 3.5” speakers in a custom box at head height behind the seats, and two 6.5” GAS GPP subwoofers in a custom box behind the seats.

I seriously can’t help but wonder how he managed to fit all this into a Boxster, given that these cars aren’t exactly known for their spacious interiors.

In the center console and dashboard, he’s also installed a custom 3D-printed housing for air controls, SafeDrive, and light control buttons. He’s also begun reupholstering the interior from red leather to black Alcantara.

Most people would never claim that the Stuttgart-based company’s cars are slow, but while Daniel’s Boxster looks faster than most, there’s no fire-breathing monster hiding behind the driver.

It emerged from the factory with the 2.5-liter base-model engine, and aside from regular maintenance, it’s been left untouched. With 204 German workhorses and 245 Nm of torque, it’s definitely no slouch anyway.

The Boxster accelerates from 0-100 km/h (62mph) in 6.9 seconds and has a top speed of 240 km/h (150 mph) — more than enough for Norway’s narrow and poorly maintained roads.

The car still has its original brakes, but the calipers have received a lick of green paint to match the body. While not super-impressive, they still do their job as long as the engine remains stock.

Daniel isn’t done with the car yet. Future plans include finishing the interior, adding a wing with custom brackets, custom headlights and taillights, wide-body modifications, and eventually repainting it in a new color.

The Porsche will undoubtedly appear at various events next season. It’s already been showcased at the Oslo Motor Show and Motorama in Stavanger, where it won “Best Stance.”

Daniel has created a Porsche Boxster that even the most die-hard 911 enthusiast will turn to look at. Every modification was done to bring the car as close to perfection as possible in the eyes of the owner. He wanted a car that stands out and evokes reactions, and there’s no denying that he’s succeeded.

Green is famously the color of envy. It’s hard to imagine a color that’s more suitable for this Boxster, and I’m sure many onlookers feel a twinge of envy as he drives by.

Daniel would like to extend a big thank you to his family and friends for their support, and NAVITINT for tinting the headlights when he decided to do it spontaneously the night before heading to the Oslo Motor Show.
